Introduction to Sciences of Hadith

Students are introduced to hadith terminology, including a basic overview of the historical development of hadith transmission, the methodologies of hadith scholars in their works, and the relationship between hadith sciences and the principles of jurisprudence. Students will gain an appreciation for the preservation of the Sunnah—one of history’s greatest intellectual achievements, learn responses to the objections of those who cast aspersions on the corpus of hadith, and properly understand the practical implications of judging a hadith.

Intermediate Sciences of Hadith

Students examine hadith terminology in greater depth, including a study of the historical development of hadith transmission, the methodologies of hadith scholars in their works, and the relationship between hadith sciences and the principles of jurisprudence. Arabic reading and Intro to Sciences of Hadith are required.

Advanced Sciences of Hadith I

Students examine hadith terminology in greater depth, along with narrator biographies and narrator evaluation. Students also practice the application of these sciences through takhrij (extracting and judging chains) with examples from the six canonical books of hadith. Intermediate Sciences of Hadith is required.

Advanced Sciences of Hadith II

Students examine hadith terminology in greater depth, along with narrator biographies and narrator evaluation. Students also practice the application of these sciences through takhrij (extracting and judging chains) with examples from the six canonical books of hadith. Advanced Sciences of Hadith I is required.

Legal Hadith

Students analyze a selection of legal hadith, with an emphasis on the application of legal theory and a comparison of the different conclusions the jurists reached on the rulings extracted from the hadith. Arabic reading, Intro to Sciences of Hadith and Intro to Legal Theory is required.
